Studio philosophy
Modern Practice at Kō Studio Art
At Kō Studio Art, we embrace a Maoli (Native Hawaiian) mindset, honoring the cultural and spiritual roots of tattooing while connecting our clients to their personal stories and the natural origins of their identity. In Maoli culture, motifs were inspired by the ‘āina (land), reflecting the deep relationship between people and the natural world. Guided by this tradition, we specialize in botanical and nature-themed designs that promote growth, healing, and connection.
We approach each client as a whole person, considering their mental, metaphysical, physical, emotional, and communal well-being throughout the tattooing process. While we do not offer traditional Maoli motifs, we thoughtfully counsel and guide clients toward designs that honor their individuality and celebrate their journey. Our goal is to create tattoos that nurture identity and foster empowerment, serving as lifelong symbols of resilience and self-expression.
As a wahine (female) Native Hawaiian-led studio in a male-dominated industry, we are deeply committed to creating a safe, respectful, and empowering space for our clients. At Kō Studio Art, tattooing is more than ink on skin—it is an act of storytelling, healing, and transformation rooted in care and intention.
